Voter registration drives can be important, powerful additions to a nonprofit’s advocacy efforts. In this election season, Alliance for Justice’s Bolder Advocacy attorneys have been fielding questions about how organizations can make their voter registration drives more effective while remaining legally compliant. Specifically, some organizations have asked whether they can incentivize and/or reward activists who register the most voters with a prize.

California is the first state to ask federal officials to allow undocumented immigrants in the state to buy health insurance through its state exchange, Covered California. Immigrant rights’ advocates applauded this step towards health care for all Californians, including those who are undocumented.

Newly formed 501(c)(4) organizations now have a new filing requirement. The IRS has issued a final and temporary regulation along with guidance to implement new requirements for 501(c)(4) organizations that had been passed as part of the PATH (Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes) Act.
