Many groups use litigation as a very effective advocacy strategy to preserve and expand critical rights and protections.  Many of our most valued policy successes, such as school desegregation, the legality of interracial marriage, and the right to an abortion, have come about through the courts.  Nonprofits often engage in litigation by filing suits challenging the constitutionality or enforcement of laws, testifying as expert witnesses, or drafting amicus briefs to call attention to issues raised by a court case.
